We want to encourage you that if you're looking for a home church let this page give you some insight of what were about based off some amazing people here at Joy.

  • Pastor Lee E. Wheatley

    Founding Pastor of Joy

Pastor Lee answered the call of God to begin a new work for Him in the year of 1982, thus Joy Christian Center began. First, we were a few in our home and the Lord told Lee that we would not grow any larger than our home would hold, so we began the search for a place to hold services on Sunday mornings. God opened a door for us in Arcadia, and we were there for one year. Then God opened another door in Duarte and we were there for twenty eight years. There isn't enough space to tell the entire story of how the Lord worked and preformed miracle after miracle in the life of Joy Christian Center and Pastor Lee. Pastor Lee now resides in Heaven enjoying life everlasting. We are very grateful for the foundation he laid.

  • Pastor Ernie Benavides

    Former Senior Pastor of Joy

It is a Joy and Honor to serve the people of Joy Christian Center as Senior Pastor.  Let me introduce myself and my family.

I have been serving at Joy Christian Center as Senior Pastor for 6 years.
I formally was the Associate Pastor of Family Life at Faith Community Church in West Covina, California.  I was in charge of Assimilation ministries, Iron Man men’s ministries, Pastoral Care, Singles ministries, Marriage and Family ministries, Event coordination and Facilities management.

I received a Master’s of Divinity degree from Azusa Pacific University, Haggard School of Theology in 1999. I also received a Bachelor’s of Architecture degree from Texas Tech University in 1983.

I own my own Architectural design firm of EJB Designs that helps churches expand their ministries through architecture as well as help families home expansion dreams come true.

I have been involved in ministry since 1988 starting as an Associate Pastor at Diamond Bar Friends Church in charge of youth ministries.  In 1992, I along with other youth pastors, organized the youth leaders counsel of the Evangelical Friends Church Southwest which, represents 42 Friends Churches throughout the states of California, Nevada, Utah and Arizona.  I have spoken and directed many youth camps and Men’s Advances for the Friends churches and others.  In 1994 I became the Senior Pastor at Pico Rivera Friends Church and remained there until my move to Faith Community Church in 2001 and subsequently moving on to Joy Christian Center in 2006.

Just for fun in college I was a Radio Disc Jockey in Lubbock Texas from 1980-83 at KTXT Fm88 an eclectic station playing everything from Rock to Classical music.

I have also led worship services for youth camps and church groups.  I enjoy guitar playing, softball and riding motorcycles.

I have been married to Cindy, my high school sweetheart, for the past 30 years and have three daughters; all three of which are married. We have 3 wonderful grand children Jayden, Makai and Asher.

It is my prayer that God would grant us success and prosperity as we work together with Him and His people to increase the Kingdom of God by healing the broken hearted, encouraging the downtrodden and strengthening the army of God.

    In Him,
    Pastor Ernie Benavides
